To all of you who joined us last week, thank you for making our first Salon evening an overwhelming success! We greatly appreciate everyone's kindness and creativity in providing tasty treats and refreshments of all kinds. (This is a trend we will cheerfully encourage. :) )
We would like to invite you all to join us again next week, on Thursday, February 24th, to view Episode 3 of Eyes on the Prize, called "Ain't Scared of Your Jails". This episode focuses on youth activism, including sit-ins at lunch counters, the emergence of the student movement, and the birth of the Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). (For more information on SNCC, click "Michael" under the Categories menu.) For those of you who were unable to join us last week, we would like to emphasize that the Eyes on the Prize episodes are all self-contained films that can stand alone. Each one speaks to a particular historical moment, and missing one (or more) does not limit your understanding of subsequent episodes. In other words, if you couldn't make it last time, don't let that stop you this week!
We hope that you can join us on Thursday for another evening of learning and discourse, and feel free to bring a friend. Ráday Salon is meant to be interactive and participatory -- while some of us may have more background knowledge in some discussions, everyone's opinion is welcome and valued, and we encourage everyone to engage in dialogue. We are all students and we are all teachers at one time or another. And knowledge of English is not a pre-requisite for the discussion - translation will be provided by somebody!
And, as always, watch this space for more links, background material, and related topics.
